Say hello to England’s hottest music export, Sofar Sounds. Started in 2009 in a small flat in North London, Sofar (Songs From A Room) Sounds is revolutionizing and reinventing the underground music scene across the world through intriguing, intimate gigs. Hoping to restore the glory of live music. And why is this happening? Well, the reason is simple.

Films, television, radio and the internet based music apps, for better or worse, have kind of dulled our music experiences. Either that, or you go to concerts, only to wait in line for hours to catch a blurred glimpse of the  an artist  a 100 yards away!

Now, imagine this. You sign up for a gig, not knowing who the performers are until show time or where the gig will be held. If you get invited, you go to the secret location, revealed to you only 24 hours prior to the show. It can be somebody’s living room, garage or rooftop- and you experience music that feels more authentic, more privileged.

What’s Sofar?

Sofar Sounds is like a secret society — shrouded in mystery, highly selective, and fueled by a revolutionary mentality —just for music lovers. There are three simple rules: you have to listen to the music, cannot text during performances and have to sit through the entire show.

Despite having a strong presence in 305 cities and an international curatorial brand, Sofar still maintains its tight-knit identity, as local community members organize, film, photograph, and record the performances by homegrown artists on a volunteer basis. Since music fans themselves create the concert targeting the most passionate music performers and audiences, Sofar Sounds is ultimately changing the way we consume live music. Add to this the privilege of being invited, enjoying music with the least of expectations and voila! You are in for an enthralling experience!

Sofar in India

Featuring exceptionally talented musicians like Tajdar Junaid, Zoya, Mohit Mukhi, Sid Vashi, Parvaaz, Abhi Tambe and Easy Wanderlings, Sofar is present in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi and Ahmedabad.

It’s expanding to more cities every day! All you have to do is register as a volunteer and help organize the event thereby doing your bit in expanding the horizons of music in India.

For all the underrated, independent musicians in our country, and for music lovers like you and me, Sofar is a wonderful way of setting the stage for path breaking music. Sure, Sofar stands for songs from a room, but it may as well be the best live music experience you will have in a long time. I had mine in New York City in the summer of 2016, and I can safely conclude that it was unparalleled.
