Spread over a two-acre campus, Global Music Institute is a holistic music school. It brings musical influences from across the globe to the Indian sub-continent. The aim: to build ‘a local-to-global music community’. To bring together people from varied genres, having different ideas and influences and create a dynamic environment of learning and collaboration. The institute that was started in 2011, by brothers Tarun and Aditya Balani has already become the go to school for budding musicians.
The Balani Brothers
The Balani brothers are passionate musicians with Jazz as their forte. Both are students of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston. One is a drummer, the other a guitarist. In addition, Tarun is a percussionist and composer while Aditya is a composer and songwriter. Tarun was the first Indian student to be selected for the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Aditya was among the featured artists for Jazz Revelation Records, 2010. Global Music Institute (GMI) is their baby!
The Berklee Connection
GMI endorses a universal and inclusive approach to learning music. In-depth study of Indian Classical, Hindustani, Folk music, genres deep rooted in tradition are imparted alongside Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, Western Classical here. In order to provide this, the founders have tied up with their alma mater in Boston. GMI is the official representative of Berklee College of Music in India. It is the doorway for aspiring musicians to get international exposure. The institute hosts regular auditions and interviews for admissions to Berklee. It runs a similar curriculum. There is also a regular exchange of International faculty members, who visit GMI at regular intervals to impart western music styles and nuances.
World Class Infrastructure
The Institute has state-of-the art facilities. One can partake in private lessons, music forums, ensemble workshops, seminars, performances by faculty and visiting artists at various places on the campus. GMI offers housing for students and faculty. A 150-seat auditorium, 100-seat experimental theatre and an amphitheatre, are available for performances. The academic spaces include large multipurpose classrooms, private teaching studios, a 2,500 square foot multimedia library, 15 practice rooms and an audio production lab with specialized music software. Not to forget the plush student lounges and cafeteria.
GMI’s curriculum is an ideal mix of the creative, technical and management. One can opt for either the one-year certificate course, a two-year diploma or the three-year graduate diploma. The subjects include everything from music theory to ear training. The certificate course provides a foundation in essential skills and core elements of music. The diploma delves into the career-development of an artist as much as the pursuit of music itself. GMI also collaborates with cultural and music venues in New Delhi to give its students performance opportunities outside the campus. One can also apply for scholarship for the full-time graduate diploma.
