Nritarutya –A premier contemporary dance troupe that strives to make ancient philosophies relevant in the present world via their aesthetic dance creations. Nritarutya’s choreographic repertoire has played a defining role in shaping the landscape of contemporary dance in India. Innovation in tradition, and showcasing what is modern India, is their forte.
Based in Bengaluru, this performing company was founded in the year 2000, by the dancing sisters, Mayuri Upadhya and Madhuri Upadhya.
Trained in Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Chaau, Odissi and Kalaripayattu- Mayuri is one of the leading choreographers of the nation. Taking inspiration from India’s cultural heritage, her choreography stands out for capturing India’s spirit and valour in her eclectic choreographies. Mayuri is also a judge on the Kannada reality dance show ‘Dancing Star 2’. Winner of the ‘International Competition of Choreography for Asian Dance Productions’, South Korea, 2012, her fans include none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi and superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Madhuri is a trained Bharatnatyam, Kathak, Kalaripayattu exponent who is also accomplished in Taek-Won Do. She choreographs occasionally but gives more importance to detailing and the use of multiple media. With a degree in Fine Arts, the diverse patterns in her choreography are a reflection of her natural talent for painting.
Their work so far
A pride of skilled dancers they creatively adapt traditional dance grammar to modern sensibilities using modern technology skilfully. Acts like Ardhanarishwara, Matsyaangnaa, Chittara and Kali, prove time and again that this group is constantly evolving. Electrifying choreographies with new sensibilities, their performances are a class apart.
What they offer
Spread cross four centers in Bengaluru, Nritarutya hosts dance classes for amateurs and professionals, aspiring and passionate dancers. They conduct regular classes and workshops to spread creative dance understanding. They also host corporate programmes on themes like De-Stressing, Team Building, and Contemporary Innovations in Indian Movement Art.
